History

Corndogs + Avocados has been around in one form or another since 1999 when we were living in Japan. We weren’t super switched on at that time about blogs or self-publishing, but since we were a long way from home we (read: I) was on a constant search for ways to keep in touch via the internet. We were heavy users of Pagoo, ICQ, Net2Phone, and other web technologies that helped us feel connected to the family.

Version 1.0.0 We eventually came across a website that was the precursor to modern blogging. It allowed us to upload pictures and give text descriptions. Our family loved it. We don’t remember the name of the service as it has long since shuttered its doors, and along with it a ton of content we had uploaded. This was version 1.0.0 of Corndogs + Avocados.

Version 2.0.0 Over the next few years not a lot happened on the blogging front for us. I discovered an early version of WordPress during this time but didn’t really have the time to learn how to use it. Instead I created a simple one-page website that showed random pictures of us when the user refreshed the page, as well as random headers. This was version 2.0.0 of Corndogs + Avocados (called 04.ca at that time).

Version 3.0.0 In early 2004 I registered the domain darinliz.com and began using it in place of 04.ca. I also increased the size of the random images and added a lot more of them. This was version 3.0.0.

Version 4.0.0 In late 2005 I discovered WordPress again and began learning how to use it. In early 2006 we started a blog using Blogger/Blogspot. This was version 4.0.0.

Version 5.0.0 A few weeks later we decided to migrate all the content on Corndogs + Avocados to WordPress and I had become more familiar with it and comfortable. Thus our blog as it now stands was born. This is version 5.0.0.

Version 6.0.0 Theme change.

Version 7.0.0 Theme change.

Version 7.0.5 Now that we are permanently on WordPress, we are changing version numbers each time we change to a new theme. We are currently on our third theme, so that makes the current version 7.0.5. Why the .5 you might ask? Well, read on.

The following explanation of versioning is from Wikipedia:

Software uses a versioning scheme where different major releases of the software each receive a unique numerical identifier. This is typically expressed as three numbers, separated by periods, such as version 2.4.1. One very commonly followed structure for these numbers is: major.minor.revision.

In principle, in subsequent releases, the major number is increased when there are significant jumps in functionality [in our case, whenever we make a permanent move to another theme], and the minor number is incremented when only minor features or significant fixes have been added, and the revision number is incremented when minor bugs are fixed.

We’re going to update the revision number every time I make small changes to darinliz.com. For example, I just made some enhancements to the commenting feature, and this is the fifth time I’ve made such a change to the blog. Thus, the revision number is .5. We’ll change the minor number when we add new functionality like a gallery, or when WordPress upgrades by a minor number.

And that’s the history of Corndogs + Avocados. Thanks for reading!
