Mark your calendars, people!!

A few weeks ago I started to see posters plastered all over the place by some group called the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition for something called Bike To Work Day.

Bike to work?

Do they know how long it would take me to ride 35 miles one-way into the city? Not only would I have to dodge the 1.5 million happy commuters with whom I would be sharing the road, but I would have to go through a dark tunnel, over a long bridge, through another dark tunnel, and then up some very steep hills to the Presidio.

I asked Martha if she thought I should start the night before and she laughed at loud. I had heard that laugh once before when Liz & I lived in Japan several years ago. Liz had told me we were going for “a relaxing bike ride over a little bridge”. That “bridge” was actually a series of nine bridges spanning seven islands for a total of 29 miles (47 kms for our metric friends). For rude!! :(

At any rate, in the spirit of saving the planet and getting some exercise I did come up with a nice route map (see below) that I could follow if I did choose to ride my bike to work. I even read the How to Not Get Hit by Cars website in preparation. Unfortunately, my bike is in 50 pieces in a bike box in the garage and is unlikely to change from that state any time soon.
