I have a long history of bad luck with keys. I lose them, forget them, break them, and lock them in cars (often cars that are running) far more than I care to admit.
To remedy this key problem I started attaching my keys to a tether that is sewn into one of my coat pockets. It’s worked flawlessly up until last week when I arrived at the office, reached for the tether, and realized with horror that my keys were not attached and I had no idea where they were.
Now this was not as big of a deal as it could have been. Since I don’t drive to work I keep my car key separate from the others, so it was still safely at home. I was squarely without my office key and my house key but I am rarely the first person to arrive at either of those places so I didn’t panic; I was sure they would turn up.
And today they did turn up - in the same coat pocket where they always are. They had simply come detached from the tether and fallen deeper into the pocket. Par for the course, I would say.

My father-in-law keeps an extra pair of keys attached to his belt because he always loses his keys. My husband loses other things, my camera, ski boots (left on the train and I successfully hunted them down 2 weeks later) and most recently his iPod. Keys are less expensive. you’re lucky!

i am so glad to learn this about someone else. i went through about 9 lost housekeys as a child. then had to wear it around my neck with a shoe string. I have also left the keys locked in the car with it running. i can’t wait to tell mike about your post. he truly thinks I am the only person in the entire world who is possible of this experience.

Alice - I have a very sad story about losing a suitcase on a train from Tallinn to Warsaw that I will tell you one day. It was 13 years ago and still hurts as if it happened yesterday.
The Other Liz - I have locked my keys in a running car at least 4 times in the last 9 years. The last time I did it I was on a business trip and missed my appointment because I was stranded waiting for AAA to come rescue me.
